Innovative System-on-Chip Introduced by ST, Taking Multimedia in New Directions

On July 19, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the range of electronics applications and a world leader in developing and delivering System-on-Chip (SoC) ICs, ST (STMicroelectronics) has released its new highly integrated SoC family, uniquely integrating of comprehensive video and audio inputs, advanced video quality together with expanded functionality. These new SoCs are designed especially for multi-function high-end monitors, public displays, All-in-One PCs as well as high-performance laptops.

In the new multi-media monitor SoC family, the first three members are STDP9320, STDP9210 and STDP7320, which are integrated a DisplayPort 1.2 receiver and transmitter and a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.4 receiver. Additionally, STDP9320 and STDP9210 support 120Hz 3D Full High-Definition (FHD), very high-resolution WQXGA* and WQHD* display panels; while, the STDP 7320 sustains 60Hz FHD WUXGA* display panels. Meanwhile, the new products contain the new functions the previous products do not have, including multi-stream, multi-monitor daisy chain support, patented active video window detection, simple end-user accessible firmware updating, and the industry-leading Faroudja® imaging technology of ST.
Besides realizing wider bandwidth data up to 21.6 Gbps, the DisplayPort 1.2 receiver/transmitter enables multi-stream transmission through a single cable for daisy chain and ‘tile’ display monitor applications. The HDMI 1.4 receiver supports all mandatory 3D input formats which are defined by the HDMI 1.4 specifications. Consumers could use the patented EZ-FUN (Easy Firmware Upgrade Network) feature through a simplified On-Screen Display (OSD) menu.

In addition, the SoC family offers other digital-video and audio connectivity, like dual Digital Visual Interface (DVI), analog component, TTL and SPDIF/I2S inputs. Panel interfaces include Quad Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) and Internal DisplayPort (iDP) or Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) formats.

In order to realize advanced image quality and usability, this family combines some unique functions in this category of products. The functions are as follows:
1.Active-Video window detection, automatically detects and optimizes video embedded within Internet multimedia content and applies the Faroudja Adaptive Contrast Control II (ACC II), Active Color Management-3D (ACM-3D) and Temporal Noise Reduction (TNR), independently from the panel’s main settings;
2.Non-Uniformity luminance compensation for excellent flat-field performance;
3.Six-axis independent Color Control for correcting or customizing color;
4.PiP / PaP (Picture in Picture/Picture and Picture) for watching two different video sources simultaneously, which is a benefit of having two integrated independent video processors;

Moreover, the STDP9320 and STDP9210 in 521-ball BGA packages are now sampling for early adapter customers. In the Q4 of 2011, the STDP7320 will also be available for sampling in a 345-ball BGA package.
